If you are planning on getting pregnant, you will undoubtedly encounter countless products marketed directly at you – but what's really worth your money? If your looking to try some natural options that won't stress your wallet read on...

 CycleBeads for Ovulation Prediction
$12.99 on Amazon.com

CycleBeads are easy to use and will help you familiarize yourself with your cycles, so that you will know on what days you are most likely to conceive. Basically, CycleBeads are a color-coded string of beads, and each bead represents a day of your menstrual cycle. The color helps you determine whether you are fertile that day.

The day you start your period, you put the rubber ring on the red bead. Each day you moves the ring one bead, always in the direction of the arrow. When the ring is on the red bead or a dark bead, there is very low likelihood of pregnancy, so if you have intercourse on these days you have a very low chance of getting pregnant. When the ring is on a white bead - Days 8 through 19 - there is a high likelihood of getting pregnant if you have intercourse.

CycleBeads are based on something called the Standard Days Method, which works best for women with regular menstrual cycles that are between 26 and 32 days long. Women with cycles outside this range should use a different method of family planning.

If you are ready to start trying for a baby, the first thing you're going to want to do is start tracking your cycles. This can be as simple as marking a calender on the day your period begins. If you haven't been keeping track of your cycles on a calender, you should ask yourself the following questions:

* Do my periods usually come about when I expect them?

* When did my last period start?

* When do I think my next period will start?

* How many days are there between the day my last period started and the day I think my next period will start?

If you can tell by answering these questions that your cycles are likely to be between 26 and 32 days long, you can use CycleBeads. If you are still not sure, you can still use the CycleBeads, or a calendar, for two or three cycles just to keep track of your cycle lengths. You cannot rely on CycleBeads as a way to boost your chances of pregnancy unless you are sure your cycles are between 26 and 32 days long, but according to the World Health Organization, about 80% of women have most of their cycles within this range.

It helps tremendously if both you and your partner understand how CycleBeads work so that you can decide how to deal with the days when you can potentially get pregnant. For best results it is important that both you and your partner understand that you are likely to get pregnant if you have sex during your “fertile window.”

Honoring Our Cycles: A Natural Family Planning Workbook by Katie Singer

$9.60 on Amazon.com

In her book Honoring Our Cycles, Katie Singer uses accurate, easy-to-understand language to describe what happens during a menstrual cycle and how a baby is conceived. It explains how to chart the body's fertility signs to know which days are best for becoming pregnant or avoiding becoming pregnant, without the use of hormonal drugs. Includes excellent dietary advice for successful conception, healthy babies and families. This book is based on something called NFP (natural family planning) or FAM (fertility awareness method). It is small and thin like a workbook and the included charts are some of the easiest to use!

“If you think natural family planning is complicated, read this book--and be surprised and delighted!” says Melissa Chianta, Managing Editor of Mothering Magazine.

The author has really mastered the art of teaching the method in a very concise and easy to understand manner. One review on Amazon.com reads: “I can't emphasize enough how much easier it is to learn how to chart to prevent or to plan a pregnancy with this book than with other books.”

One of the best features of the book: the author teaches you how to use NFP while breast feeding. Other books make it seem quite complicated but Singer does an excellent job in this book explaining how to use NFP while nursing a baby and she does it in under one page. Singer makes perfect sense, her method is easier to use than most, and is actually doable!
