Stop looking for happiness. If you seek it, you won't find it, because happiness is always elusive. Freedom from unhappiness, however, is possible right NOW.”
- Eckhart Tolle
Are you truly happy? Apart from the obvious negative emotions we all feel: anger, anxiety, hatred, resentment, discontent, envy, jealousy, etc... there are more subtle forms of negativity that are so common they are usually not even recognized as negative. For instance, impatience, irritation, nervousness and feeling “fed up.”
For some people, feelings like this make up their entire day!
Most of these negative emotions are so common that they are easily overlooked – these emotions can start to feel “normal” and familiar. We're usually so wrapped up in what's going on that we take for granted that these negative emotions are occurring.
Underneath these feelings are unconscious beliefs, or thoughts. You think these thoughts automatically, in the same way you dream your dreams at night. You may not even realize you are thinking those thoughts, just like the dreamer doesn't know he or she is dreaming.
When we let our thoughts and emotions run wild we unconsciously allow them to be part of our identity. Many people spend a large part of their lives in a negative emotional state but they are so identified with it that they cannot stand back and see it. So ask yourself: Am I feeling anything right now?
Become alert and attentive to your thoughts and your emotions....inner peace is possible but the first step is to identify the unconscious thought patterns that are in the way...
