I'd Be Happy, If Only....

Simply put, you believe that things or people make you unhappy, but this is not accurate. You make yourself unhappy.
- Wayne Dyer

If you were to hear someone say, “I hear a voice in my head,” would you think that person was crazy? That fact is, pretty much everyone hears a voice, or several voices, in their head all the time. Your involuntary thoughts, the continuous monologue or dialogue you have playing in your head – that is your internal voice:
it comments, speculates, judges, compares, complains, likes, dislikes, etc... Many people live with their own worst enemy inside their head. A person's inner thoughts can torture a person endlessly. Are you constantly beating yourself up or punishing yourself? Are your own worst critic?

So what exactly is worry? It's when you start thinking about things going wrong, when your internal voice begins rehearsing negative outcomes.... For many people this soundtrack is accompanied by visual images or “mental movies.”

What is going on with your mental chatter? Are you reviving the past? Can you catch yourself imagining the outcome of future situations? Your internal voice, your mental chatter, belongs to your conditioned mind - which is the result of all your past history, as well as collective cultural and social influence. When you judge the present through the eyes of the past you get a totally distorted view of the present.

Try to focus on listening closely to the voice in your head as often as you can. Pay extra attention to any repetitive thoughts. Look out for the ones that have been playing in your head for years.

When you listen to your mental chatter, listen without judgment. Do not criticize yourself for what you hear. If you find yourself being critical realize that it is only more mental chatter creeping back into your stream of thought. The fact is, your internal voice is not really you, it is separate from the real YOU. Inner peace is being able to sense your own presence - without thinking anything, and its easier than you think!
